Summer in Vancouver, Prelude to the Winter Games

With apologies to the 2010 Winter Olympics, causing a luxury building uptick, summer in Vancouver, British Columbia, is the four best months of the year -- June to September. With "midsummer night" launching the high season each June, I am always reminded of our hot and delightful four-day summer sojourn from the global city of Vancouver, by ferry across to Vancouver Island, southeast to the old-world capital of Victoria, by ferry again through the Orcas and San Juan Islands across to the mainland -- and south to Seattle. Biking for HIV/AIDS

My friend Tia is biking from San Francisco to LA this week to raise money for HIV/AIDS. Her adventure blog is a stitch -- she's not only a dedicated cyclist and hiker, but she's a wonderful writer and journalist. San Rafael's Italian Street Painting Festival

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area June 9-10, be sure to visit San Rafael's famous Italian Street Painting Festival. Sponsored by Youth in Arts, the festival splashes several blocks of downtown San Rafael with colorful and detailed chalk paintings -- plus music and food -- for 60,000 visitors a year. San Rafael is 25 minutes north of the city across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. Get there early to see the paintings develop, or chat with the artists once the work is done.
